Your Potential!

img_1786Ever met someone who has all the potential in the world to do anything they want? However………they don’t use it?? Have you ever wondered why?? Yeah, me too! In my line of work, I see a lot of young people (and older people) who have so much potential in a variety of things, however they don’t utilize it! This is something that is very frustrating to me because I enjoy watching people succeed. So let’s start with why they don’t even realize their potential…it’s because no one has told them!! What a simple concept right?? Have you ever looked at someone and simply said: “wow, you have so much potential!” Most people would respond with a dumbfounded look! Unless they were brought up in a home that encouraged potential, which is becoming more rare these days, the majority of people have never been given that positive vision for their life. I am a firm believer that anyone can do anything they want if they truly want it. However most people want things, but if it’s to hard to achieve, they don’t really want it anymore. Now, for myself, I do not think I could ever be a brain surgeon or neuroscientist, however I also have no interest in these either. My passion lies elsewhere so could I have done those things? Maybe, but I wouldn’t be happy.

Wow, You have so much potential!!”

So are you living up to your potential? Do you even know what your potential is? Most of us never find out because we’ve never been told we have it in the first place. I remember working through college at Jersey Mike’s Subs and battling through 40 hours a week while taking a full load of classes. The whole time I had my full focus on becoming a police officer. That’s what I was studying so that’s what I felt I needed to pursue. I was coming up to the end of my final semester and I was talking about moving for a potential job offer. Now up to this point I had a mentor that I worked with who would attempt to persuade me to stay in the business but I wasn’t having it. I remember the day like it was yesterday, when my general manager looked at me with such frustration and said “Why can’t you just see your potential???” At the time it didn’t mean as much as it does now, however my mind was so saturated with what I wanted that I wasn’t focused on what my potential was. It’s funny because after all this time, I am still working for Jersey Mike’s and own a portion of one. The point is, if those people didn’t push me to understand my value and potential, I wouldn’t be where I am today. We eventually moved and I switched company’s still under the Jersey Mike’s franchise and was immediately challenged to my absolute, fullest potential. Accomplishing more in the last 2 years than I could have ever imagined including buying into my own store. But it all started with one person telling me the potential I had!!

People need to be encouraged and reminded of their value on a daily basis. Something I struggle with is saying thank you to my staff and telling them I appreciate their work. I can cast you a vision and a road map all day, but I struggle with saying thank you. I am willing to admit my faults and continue to work on them daily. The best part of my job is watching people live up to their potential and watching them set, meet and exceed their goals. If you see someone who has potential in a certain area, TELL THEM!! Encourage them to pursue whatever it is they are good at and work 100% to achieve their goals. Constant encouragement will always help them gain respect not only for you, but for themselves.

So what is your potential??

Dedicate yourself….

img_1779The subject of leadership can bring up an array of topics to cover as well as discussions to have. I have realized that the majority of people who I know who have strong leadership qualities have such a tight list of core values that they dedicate themselves to live by. These are things that they would never compromise for any reason. Now I am not saying you cannot be a strong leader if you do not have core values, however I feel that when you do, it is almost like self accountability to ensure you are dedicated to your vision. The company I work for has core values and I can remember when we were all in discussion about what the list should contain. Everyone sent an email with 5 things they would like to see on the list. Basically, core values for your business, your family or even just yourself should be characteristics that you strive to uphold. For example, our first core value is teamwork: this is somewhat of an obvious one for a company because without teamwork, things become chaotic and unorganized. Naturally, this may not be a core value in your personal life, but it is ideal for a business or organization. In addition to teamwork, we also have integrity, excellence, relationship driven, and giving back to our community. All things we are passionate about in our company and strive for on a daily basis. These are things that I have personally adopted into my life and try to display every day while working. Hopefully I have painted a good picture for you of what our company is about.

“Dedicate yourself to your values and standard”

So the question to ask yourself now is what are my own core values? Do I need core values? Do successful people have core values? Well, not necessarily would be an answer to all these questions. However, I believe the only way to lead others successfully is to change their core. Someone may have all the potential in the world, but if their inner core is “rotten,” then at some point their potential will run out. I believe your core values start at home and you will display them when you leave. What kind of person are you when you are home? Are you the worlds best friend when your out and about, but when you arrive home, you change? How do you treat your spouse? Leadership starts with being selfless to other people. One thing I learned from my brother-in-law long before I got married was we should begin each day thinking of how we can serve our spouse. How can we make their day better? That word: SERVICE is something we don’t hear much about anymore unless it’s a “church service” or “community service.” These are great things don’t get me wrong, however are we serving others every chance we get? Even the highest level CEO of a company, the strongest leader of that business, should be a servant at times whether it is counseling someone or just expressing his appreciation to his workers. Selflessness and service will allow you to be so humbled that you will make a difference in many people’s lives. I always hear about husbands who will sacrifice their lives for their wives in an instant if something detrimental were to happen, however my question to that is why aren’t you sacrificing yourself daily for your wife? My wife and I have only been married 2 and half years and I fully understand how being selfless and humble seems impossible at times, but also being the leader of the household, how important it is to humble myself for my wife. Serving her on a daily basis to make her day a fraction better and to take stress off her plate. I am not saying I’m the perfect husband by any means because I certainly know my flaws and understand I can be selfish at times, however it is not the action that defines a man, it is his core and his response to accountability for that action that will define him.

“Leadership starts with being selfless to other people”

Leadership and discipline are things that take practice and require a lot of sacrifice to achieve. Holding oneself to a higher standard and not letting others sway your decisions and values. These are things that have become increasingly difficult in today’s world. Disciplining oneself mentally and physically to set a positive example for other people who may not have the same drive and focus. The reason I love getting up early and having a consistent workout regimen and even something as simple as having a healthy marriage  is because it is almost weird to other people! I enjoy doing things that other people are unable to do, not because they can’t, but because they are mentally to weak to do so. I enjoy being that example to others saying  yes, you can do this, you are just choosing not to because you are comfortable where you are. Remember, you should train yourself to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I always tell people the only reason something is uncomfortable is because you don’t do it enough! Being a leader is stepping out of your comfort zone and choosing not to stand still in life, but to continually do things that will propel you forward to get you closer to your goals. It’s okay to want things, but you have to work for it.

21 Day challenge: update

img_1782We have reached day 6 of the 21 day challenge of getting up at 4:30am and I will say that it has been very rewarding so far. A lot of things have changed mentally for me as well as physically. Getting up early has allowed me to spend more time focusing on what is important in my life and also everything I need to improve on. It has also given me a lot more energy throughout the day to strive to be better and better. Prior to doing the challenge, around 2 in the afternoon I would be so tired that I would lose focus and just coast through the remainder of the day. There were things that needed to be done, but I ignored because I was to tired to care. However gaining the two hours of sleep at night and also gaining the two hours of productivity in the morning has really boosted my drive and determination. Mentally, I can feel my attitude has improved toward other people and I feel like I am able to share in things I enjoy again. It’s very interesting to me how such a small change can make such a large impact on everything else. My workouts have improved as well so now I am putting my attention onto my nutrition to really drive the big three (exercise, nutrition, sleep) home and really get into a strong and positive habit. I would say it has been a successful week with the challenge and am excited to continue with it next week!

Success is a Muscle

img_1775

So it hit me on my ride home how success is like a muscle. Of course just like leadership, success can also be defined in many ways. Most people define success by how much you have, especially money. Regardless of how you define it, if you are truly passionate about becoming successful, you are bound to hit obstacles and run into problems. So now I want you to think about one person you know who is fit. Or if you don’t know anyone, get new friends 😉 and think of the most fit person you’ve ever seen. How did they build their muscles? Ask that person “how did you get such a huge bicep muscle?” No muscle can grow and get bigger without first having some kind of resistance against it. When a muscle is broken down in the gym, it has no idea how much weight is being used, all it knows is the amount of force and resistance that is being placed on it. So then with proper nutrition it will grow back bigger and stronger. Sounds easy right??!! Well, if it was easy, we would all be on a magazine cover!

So think about that resistance you forced on your muscle. The only way you will ever reach what you define as success, you will first go through some kind of resistance. Hard times, stress, late nights, all these things provide resistance on your life. Well what comes after resistance? Growth!! It’s time to rebuild that “muscle!” So the rebuilding process includes building your knowledge on what your striving for, seeking counsel from people who have already accomplished that goal, and digging deeper to find your inner strength and drive. You cannot grow without resistance and you won’t be successful without hard times and problems. It’s how you approach these problems and how you overcome them that will rebuild and grow that muscle.

What comes after resistance? Growth!!”

The reason why most people have a New Years resolution for losing weight and getting fit is because they are unhappy or feel insecure, (especially in today’s world). However the reality is that 90% of those people give up after only a couple weeks! Why?? Because it gets hard. They get “to busy” and can’t find time. Anything that provides resistance in life is going to hurt some how. That “burn” you feel in the gym is from Lactic Acid that builds in the muscle when resistance is forced on it. Essentially, (without sounding like a chemistry professor) we all have goals and want success. However we have lactic acid that builds up in our lives when things get hard thus causing pain or stress and force us to give up. The thing is in the muscle building industry, lactic acid is a positive thing because it aids in muscle break down! So when our “success” in life is being broken down by hardships and stress, we have to continually push through the burn so we can begin the rebuilding process! If you truly want something, the pain will drive you to work harder to build your success muscle!

“It’s not about you, it’s about them”

img_1769Take a second and think about the most important people in your life who had a very strong impact on how you turned out……I’ll wait…..got it? Were these people strong leaders in your life like your parents, grandparents or teachers? What about a mentor? Now take a second to think about how they impacted you…..John Maxwell is a very popular author of many leadership books and he discusses how leadership is broken down into different steps. However in all my experience and reading, there are either 100 different ways to describe leadership or people can’t define it at all. When I read one of Maxwell’s books, he defines leadership as “influence.” Now take a second to think about those people again….did they have a strong influence on you? More than likely they did!!

Of course this could be argued by saying, “well I’ve had people who influenced me in a negative way.” The reality of this is those same people probably had all the necessary leadership skills to lead others, but they didn’t use it for good and they used it to influence people in a negative way. Leadership skills are the same either way but can be used to manipulate just as easy as they are to grow others. This is where the core of that person needs to be strong and positive.

It’s not about you

Influencing other people is a very powerful tool to have in your tool box. However, the foundation of this influence needs to be your intentions. If you are someone who people come to for advice or to ask life altering questions, give yourself a pat on the back because it means you are a trustworthy person. You are influencing others with your advice so understand that every word out of your mouth could potentially be challenged.  When these people ask you questions, you want to try and return with a challenge to them and ask them questions as well. For example: let’s say someone comes to you in confidence and expresses how they consistently have no money to spend. A good response question to them would be “What kind of choices are you making with the money you do have?” Challenge their minds and raise their perception on the very topic they approached you with. Good influence is digging deep into a person and changing their mindset on everything. I always tell people who are rising fast, they need to take off their slippers and put their dress shoes on. Stepping out of their current mindset and stepping into a stronger, more mature state of mind.

It’s about them

One of the first things I learned about being a leader is it is no longer about me. Now I personally have more to learn about leadership and do not consider myself a “John Maxwell” by any means, however you do not need a lot of experience to simply influence another person. The majority of people influence others on a daily basis without ever knowing it. In my line of work, I am responsible for 10-15 other people at a time so I quickly learned how it was no longer about me but about them. Investing in and Empowering them to feel important and understood. Kids from 16 to adults in their 20s and up. Realizing that a 16 year old will always respond differently than a 25 year old, but treating them both with the same respect. Influence comes in all shapes and sizes, but showing someone you genuinely care about them and care about their success will give them more hope than anything else. It’s not about you, it’s about them.

21 Day Challenge

img_1768     On Sunday, I was brainstorming ways to become more productive during the week (Sundays are my motivating days). I don’t know what it is about Sundays but everyone becomes more motivated to attack the week. For example: ever wonder why there are more people in the gym on Monday than there is on Friday?? You guessed it, because its chest day!! Just kidding, but seriously, it’s because everyone gets pumped on Sunday for the upcoming week, however they get burnt out by Wednesday and lose sight of all their goals. So then they have to restart on the next Sunday.

So I recently found a blog about waking up at 4:30am everyday for 21 straight days. For those who don’t know, it takes 21 days to start a new habit! So this past Monday I decided to give it a go. I have been very impressed with the results and it is only day 3. I will say the first day was very tough because I was coming off the weekend so 4:30 on a Monday morning was brutal. However I pushed through the pain of my alarm clock and got out of bed. Made myself a cup of black coffee and did a morning devotional. I am a firm believer in starting the day with a minimum of 1 positive thing to script the rest of your day. So I have been starting with coffee which energizes my mind and my mood, a devotional which energizes my spirit and then I hit the gym which energizes everything else!

Strong leadership begins with how a person feels and if you are weak, tired, cranky, unfocused and unmotivated, the last thing you want to do is lead and influence other people. I will update throughout the week how my progression goes and see if my motivation decreases at all. I will say though the last three days have been very eye opening on how going to bed early and waking up early positively affects your production throughout the day. #21dayearlymorningchallenge

First post!!

I am excited to begin this new journey into the blogging world. My vision is to provide information, insight, and different outlooks on the fitness world and also the leadership world (or lack thereof). I haven’t seen very many people talking about leadership and how it correlates with health and wellness so hopefully I will be able to shed some light on this. I appreciate anyone who reads and as I continue to write posts, feel free to comment and ask questions!
